KUCHING: SMK DPHA Gapor of Stampin emerged victorious in the Kuching MSSM Handball Championship after beating SMKA Matang 9 – 5 in the final held at Stakan Sport Complex, Kota Sentosa yesterday.

Zacxavier Then was the toast of the champion team after he became top scorer thanks to his basketball skills and he scored a total of 25 goals throughout the tournament.

Head coach Awang Rosli Awang Junaidi who is former state handball striker said his team is the only team whose players are from various races with five of them will also be representing their school in the coming inter-school basketball competition end of the month.

In handball games Rosli suggested that it is the basic combination of basketball and netball games where players can apply ball passing and handling tactics to their advantage.

“And before the final I advised my players to control the game through accurate passing in order to improve on their finishing,” he added. Rosli who is also Sarawak Handball Association coaching chairman revealed that handball is fast getting popular in the state and in last month’s Sarawak Open Handball Championship in Unimas a record of 43 teams from throughout the state took part.

“In the past we normally received about 10 entries from other divisions and also recently more Chinese players are attracted to the game which was previously monopolised by Bumiputera players,” he added.

The three-day event was organised by SMK Arang with17 teams throughout Kuching took part and finishing in joint third were SMK STAR and SMK Seni Malaysia.
