Man accused of retaining stolen car released on bail

KUCHING: A 43-year-old man from Mukah was released on cash bail of RM2,000 with one local surety after he pleaded not guilty to retaining a stolen car yesterday.

The surety must be gainfully employed earning at least RM1,500 a month.

Magistrate Maris Agan fixed May 6 for the pre-trial case management for Budiman Busra who hails from Jalan Haji Latip, Mukah and fixed June 24 and 25 for the trial.

He was allegedly found in possession of a stolen Perodua Kancil EX850 in front of a house at Jalan Kuching Serian in a village in Siburan at 12.45pm on March 27.

He was charged under Section 411 of the Penal Code which carries not less than six months and not more than five years’ imprisonment, and may also be fined.

The facts of the case revealed that at about 9am on Jan 20, the complainant found his car, worth RM27,000, missing from a parking lot in front of a grocery store at Mile 13 Kuching Serian Road.

He lodged a police report.

In an unrelated case, Ibnu Hafiz Saini, 27, from Kampung Tabuan Jaya was sentenced to seven weeks’ jail after he pleaded guilty to theft from a supermarket here.

Two employees caught the accused stealing three types of perfume worth a total RM72.90 from the supermarket in Hock Lee Centre at about 4.30pm on March 30. They lodged a police report.

Ibnu Hafiz was convicted under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries an imprisonment up to 10 years or fine.

Before passing sentence, the magistrate considered public interest, nature of the offence, mitigation of the accused, that he has no previous conviction, and had pleaded guilty to the charge.
