KOTA KINABALU: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai urged shopping complexes and offices that have multi-storey car parks to dedicate priority parking zones for women.
In certain respect, Yee said women were the more vulnerable group in the society and it was important to have a parking zone dedicated to them.
Yee, who is also Minister of Resource Development and Information Technology, said this at the launching of the priority ladies parking zone at Centre Point Sabah (CPS) here yesterday.
Also present were Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir and CPS Management general manager Paul Kung.
He commended CPS for taking into consideration the security and safety of women while they visit the shopping complex to shop or conduct recreational activities.
“I hope other shopping complexes and offices where there are multi-storey car parks to implement this policy, to dedicate certain zones where security is enhanced so that women, (being) the more vulnerable sector of the society, will be taken care of.
“This is a reflection of the caring society we live in,” he said.
During his tenure as Api-Api assemblyman, Yee said he and Abidin had put in place various measures to make Kota Kinabalu a much more livable city.
Yee said they had worked with the police, such as requesting for more patrols especially in heavy traffic or crime-prone areas, to ensure the safety of individuals.
He added that lightings had also been put up, particularly in certain areas such as Kampung Air, to reduce criminal activities.
Those were the few measures that he had worked closely with the police and Abidin, which also fit into the National Key Result Areas (NKRA), Yee said when asked by the media.
Yee also echoed the suggestion by Abidin to reduce their parking rates.
“It would be fantastic if CPS takes the lead, not only in implementing the safety zones, but to emulate what the government has done to ensure the people who come here (CPS) enjoy your facilities and a reduction of parking rates as what has been done by City Hall in the past few months.”
Adding on to what Yee had said, Abidin informed that the Federal Government had allocated more than RM2 million for lighting and security fencing along the roads and walkways.
He pointed out that there had been improvements in the walkway beside CPS and Bank Negara.
