HOW ARE YOU?: Hii talking with one of the vegetable traders at Tamu Kedayan.

MIRI: The failure of a contractor to repair the fans’ main switch at Miri Central Market due to a short circuit last April 2, has forced some 64 traders there to sweat profusely while conducting their business activities.

This had not only inconvenienced the traders but also the customers who also complained of the heat.

Chairman of the Standing Committee for Market, Traders, Hawkers and Enforcement with the Miri City Council (MCC) councillor Lawrence Kong expressed his disappointment towards the irresponsible attitude of the said contractor.

“We actually have appointed a contractor to rectify the problem immediately. We have already reminded the contractor to fix the problem fast,” he said during a site visit to the market yesterday.

Kong said the problem faced by traders at the market was forwarded and highlighted through Hii King Chiong Service Centre.

He said further that the short circuit had caused four ceiling fans and three wall fans to break down. He pointed out that the council installed 22 ceiling fans at the market and the electricity system was controlled by a timer switch during business hours starting from 6am to 4pm.

The council even put a notice for the traders there and reminded them not to touch the main switch.

However, the traders ignored the warning and the act of switching off the main switch caused the short circuit in the market.

Hii who also joined the site visit, took note on the other problems faced by the traders.

Another nearby market Miri Unity Market had requested the authority to repair some of the ceiling fans which broke down.

The fish mongers at the wet market meanwhile requested the authority to transfer the existing ceiling fans to the centre of the market.

It is because the existing ceiling fans which were too close to their stalls, have sped up the process of ice melting that was used to preserve the freshness of fish.
