KOTA KINABALU: DAPSY Sabah would be going all out on a ‘ghost busting’ mission to catch phantom voters trying to vote in the 13th general election (GE13).

The mission will be led by its KK chief, Joan Goh, who promised that the phantom voters will be apprehended and handed over to the police for further action.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Joan pointed out that the issue of phantom voters was highlighted to DAPSY Sabah by a Malaysian who is now residing in the United States of America.

“We have received a case whereby this person has migrated to the USA for more than 20 years already but is still a registered voter in Likas, under the parliamentary constituency of Kota Kinabalu. His IC shows that he is from Perak but he is somehow registered as a voter in Likas.

“We first came to know of this case via his Facebook posting and thereafter we got in touch with this person to get his particulars via email. He has duly informed us that he had never registered as a voter in Sabah and has never in his life voted before.

“After having a conversation with him, the only link that we could think of is that he used to be a government servant and that the house that he used to stay was rented by the government for him,” Joan said.

Another case which they are pursuing involved an individual’s grandfather who has passed away but may still be registered as a voter, Joan said, adding that they have requested for the family to send them all the necessary documentation so that they can follow up on the case.

Goh added that DAPSY will collect as much information as they can on similar cases and the data will be forwarded to the party’s election agents on polling day.

“With the information, we will be able to identify the phantom voters as we know the actual people are either deceased or not in Sabah. So we are sending a warning to these phantom voters not to come and vote on polling day.

“We are also now calling and appealing to all Sabahan voters who are in these categories to provide us details so that we can ensure that their particulars are not used by phantom voters. Friends and family who are overseas and who has never registered before but are somehow registered as a voter now like this particular case that we are highlighting now should take note.

“Friends and family who are overseas or have migrated, are kindly requested to check their voting status in the Election Commission website at http://daftarj.spr.gov.my/ and we also advise those whose family members have passed away but who may still on the electoral rolls to check online.

“We also urge everyone to check their voting status at the website and lastly we are appealing to all genuine voters to come out to vote this time. Should any discrepancies be detected, please email to us at [email protected] the full particulars and we shall pass these on to the relevant election agents on polling day so that cases forwarded to us will be screened thoroughly. We appeal for full cooperation,” she said.
