KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Shabery Cheek urged national sports associations to reschedule competitions that clashed with the 13th General Election (GE13) polling day, that falls on May 5.

“It will be better for competitions that clashed with polling day to be rescheduled so as to avoid any inconvenience to participants who may have to carry out their obligations as voters.

“However, if the date of a major international competition cannot be changed due to logistics involved, it cannot be avoided,” he told Bernama when met at a Malaysia-Palestine humanitarian contribution event, here, yesterday which was attended by Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Sultan Ahmad Shah.

The Election Commission had yesterday announced that nomination day for GE13 would be April 20, while polling day has been fixed for May 5.

Shabery said the charity match between Malaysia-Palestine netted RM1,140,172.25 through ticket sales and sponsorship from corporate bodies.

From the amount, RM717,891.75 was handed over to the Lahad Datu Heroes’ Fund while another RM415,635 was handed to the Ambassador of Palestine Abdelaziz Aboughosh by Sultan Ahmad Shah.
