KUCHING: Sarawak Housing Development Corporation (HDC) will be launching 314 units of affordable houses in Permyjaya Curtin on April 16.

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg are expected to perform the earth-breaking ceremony.

The building of more low-cost houses in Miri City is expected to reduce the number of squatters there significantly and also to provide housing for the migrant workers and jobseekers there.

According to HDC spokesman, the project is implemented through the partnership between HDC and Total Reliability Sdn Bhd (TRSB).

It is understood that since 1995, the HDC through the Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) has built more than 5,000 units of low-cost houses in Permyjaya alone.

With the building of more low-cost houses in the state, the government is confident that it could reach its target of zero squatters by 2015.

Miri has the highest number of squatter-colonies in five villages at Api Api in Lutong and Pujut Corner.

The government plans to achieve the target of zero squatters by 2015 especially in Miri through a holistic approach.

According to a reliable source, the state government expects to build some 3,132 units of affordable houses on 314 acres of land in the same location soon.
