Families of chopper crash victims donate for mosque construction

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: A donation handover ceremony for the construction of the new Kampong Manggis and Kampong Madang Mosque was held yesterday at the residence of the Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar bin Hj Apong, who is also the Chairman of the Mosque’s Construction Trust Committee, Borneo Bulletin reported.

The event began with mass Mar prayer, followed with the recitation of Surah Yaasiin and Tahlil for the victims of the Bell 212 chopper tragedy, which was led by Imam Hj Abdul Warith bin Hj Raini.

The donations were received by Pehin Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar from family members of the late Captain Md Ismael bin Dato Setia Hj Md Samid, Lt Pg Arif Iskandar bin Pg Hj Shabuddin, Lt Md Khairol Mandi bin Hj Sahri, SSjn Md Amin bin Awg Mahmud, Cpl Mohd Mandenie bin Nurudin and ‘L-Cpl Muhammad Khairuddin bin Hj Abbas.

Also presenting donations was a representative of Dato Setia Hj Mohd Samid bin Hj Abdul Aziz; Awg Hj Mohammad bin Jambol and a Turkish student from Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

Also present at the ceremony were Pg Dr Hj Mohd Yakub Pg Hj Othman, Secretary of the Mosque’s Construction Trust Committee; Pengiran Hj Ali bin Pengiran Maon, Penghulu of Mukim Berakas ‘B’; Pengiran Hj Idros bin Pengiran Hj Mahmud, Treasurer of the Mosque’s Construction Trust Committee as well as other members of the Mosque’s Construction Trust Committee.

The construction of the Kampong Manggis and Kampong Madang Mosque started in 2012; with the costs of the construction at $5.2 million.

About $2 million out of the total cost came from donations made by members of the public.
