KUCHING: A vocational school student died in a road accident on Thursday following a collision between his motorcycle and a car at Taman BDC.

The student has been identified as Roward Mydar Mathew, 17, of Taman BDC.

The incident occurred around 9pm when the Form 5 student of Batu Lintang Vocational School was out visiting a friend staying in the same area.

His motorcycle was said to have crashed into the side of a Volvo after the driver made a turn into a junction in front of him, resulting in him sustaining serious head injuries.

An ambulance was called to the scene to transport the victim to the Sarawak General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

According to the mother, Roward, the youngest of three sons, had returned home from school around 4pm and spent the rest of the afternoon repairing a motorcycle belonging to his elder brother.

She said she last saw him when he took the bike and headed off to a friend’s house around 8pm, adding one of his friends showed up at her house later to inform her of the accident.

The Volvo driver, who initially drove off from the scene, lodged a police report of the fatal collision the same night.

In an unrelated incident, a 41-year-old fireman from the Samarahan fire station suffered a broken leg after he was struck by a car in Asajaya on Thursday night.

The victim was returning home from work when his motorcycle struck a dog in the middle of the road, causing him to fall into the opposite lane and into the path of an oncoming Perodua Viva.

He ended up being struck by the Viva and suffered a broken left leg, and was then sent to the Sarawak General Hospital where he was admitted for treatment.
