Australia claims top spot at SLTA Centre

TICKET TO CZECH REPUBLIC: Team Australia lead three other teams to the finals in Czech Republic in August.

KUCHING: Australia beat second seed India to claim this year’s Final Qualifiers for World Junior Team Boys competition yesterday.

They won their first two ties before India decided to withdraw from the doubles.

India fought well and had won the first set in both ties.

In the first, Alex De Minaur beat India’s Alex Solanki 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 before Alexei Popyrin beat Solanki’s compatriot 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Tournament first seed Japan took third place after beating Thailand 2-1.

It was a close fight between the two teams and Thailand’s Sirawit Daosengsawang drew first blood in the first tie to win 7-6(8), 6-1.

Yunosuke Tanaka pulled one back for Japan when he edged Vorachon Rakpuangchon 6-2, 7-5, 0-6.

Tanaka then paired up with Daisuke Sumizawa to beat Sirawit and Vorachon in the deciding doubles 6-2, 7-5.

Both matches took place at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) Centre.

The four countries have now qualified to play at the final of the World Junior Team Boys Group competition in Czech Republic this coming August.
