KUALA LUMPUR:  State health directors have been instructed to monitor and investigate private clinics in their respective areas to ensure that they do not employ bogus doctors.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said this regarding the arrest of a transvestite who posed as a medical doctor Saturday, and the man was also found to have fooled five private clinics in Melaka Tengah into letting him work there part-time.

The Health director-general had also been directed to investigate the bogus doctor case in Melaka soon, he told reporters after officiating at the ‘I Want: Sihat Bersamamu’ Expo, here yesterday.

He said private clinics need to make sure they employ doctors who are accredited by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).

“MMC will determine whether the doctor is a qualified doctor or not. We will investigate who is actually causing this problem.

“The ministry will not compromise with anyone who violates this. They will face action under a criminal act for endangering a life,” he said.

At the ceremony, Liow said the expo was a rebranding of the ministry’s health campaign aimed at creating awareness among the community and will be implemented in six locations nationwide starting yesterday in Taman Connaught, Cheras.

He added that the programme will also be coordinated with the ministry’s existing campaigns. — Bernama
