SIBU: For children of Methodist Chinese Kindergarten here every April is dedicated to earth conservation.

Throughout this month, teachers and children would make crafts and decorative items from recyclable items.

Headmistress Wong Pek Huong said teachers normally stay back until 5pm from Monday to Fridays to make the crafts.

“We are all very dedicated to this small project and would find ways to promote such activities.

“And we are very honoured to be part of the Sibu Municipal Council’s ‘Love Earth Day’; it surely will make us busy for a while,” she said.

Wong said the decorative items or accessories that the teachers make would be on sale during the ‘Love Earth Day’ celebration beginning this Friday at Wisma Sanyan lobby.

She urged the public to support the school on this important project.

Asked what inspired them to come up with different varieties of crafts every year, she said the idea came from experience and surveys in the Internet.

“I also believe that the more you do these things, the more inspirations you’ll have,” she said.

Wong also pointed out that the school educate the children on the environment with different themes every week throughout April.

Citing an example, she said the children were taught the disadvantages of plastic bag on the first week, littering and segregation of waste in another week, and saving electricity and water supply the following week.

“We specially invite people to teach the children, and of course using a very simple language for them to understand,” she said.

She was happy to note that the effort had brought some positive impact on children.

“In April, we collect recyclable items to be donated, and because we are encouraging the children to recycle, they will also encourage their parents to do the same,” she enthused.
