SIBU: SK St Mary has created a reading corner to help pupils get into the reading habit.

Headmistress Alice Ong said the corner was put in place with recyclable materials to cut cost.

“I do not like the idea of spending so much money on new stuff. We have to be prudent in spending,” she explained.

A school staff was tasked to construct book shelves while two trainee teacher helped make boxes for placing books in.

“The trainees are leaving soon, and I asked them whether they could contribute something to the school’s reading corner. They came up with the boxes made from recyclable items,” she said.

The trainees are Stella Sigi and Jong Soo Chin from IPG Kampus Rejang.

Ong said it was heartening to see pupils reading at the corner. “Hopefully, many others will follow suit.”

“A habit to read must be made the ethos of all schools,” she suggested.

On the ‘Sponsor A Book, Leave A Mark’ book donation programme, she said the response had been lukewarm.

It was proposed by former students of SK St Mary as a way to help replenish the school’s library.

The public may donate used books (fiction or non-fiction), magazines and other reading materials.

“They can be of any language so long as they are suitable for children,” Ong said.
