KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth secretary-general Wilfred Yap urged party members and supporters to rally behind Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates in the 13th general election.

Yap, who is SUPP Kota Sentosa Branch Youth chief, said team effort was needed to ensure the BN election machinery reach the people to disseminate information.

“I’m sure the prime minister and chief minister had sleepless nights in making the final decision on candidacy as they want the best for the party. We should rally behind whoever that is selected,” he told reporters after presenting a low cost housing letter of award to a recipient at Kpg Kudei here yesterday.

“In a mature democracy, people vote for political parties, not individuals,” he said.

Responding to statements by certain quarters that SUPP is not fulfilling its pledge by emphasising youth participation, Yap said: “We should never talk about youths being deprived but look at the bigger picture and what BN stands for.”

He said under the helm of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, BN had given opportunities to younger people by nominating more than 30 per cent new faces as candidates for the general election, and 49 per cent young people as candidates for the state election.

“Besides that, the party nominated our Youth chief Tan Kai for Bandar Kuching,” Yap said.

“I hope the people look at the bigger picture and cast their votes for BN because only BN can bring Malaysia towards Vision 2020 to become a high income nation.”

Yap assured that SUPP Youth would ensure its members come out in force to support all BN candidates to ensure its victory in the coming general election.

He said SUPP Youth focuses on securing votes from the younger generation.

Yap hoped the new batch of parliamentarians make the effort to strengthen the anti-corruption law.

“I’m not saying that anyone is corrupted but just referring to the law. I feel if we tighten the anti-corruption law, our country will be a better place and we can reduce corruption at least.”
