LABUAN: The people of Labuan are urged to continue supporting the Barisan Nasional (BN) so that the development made in the oil and gas industry can be maintained, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said under the administration of the BN government, many leading companies chose to have their base in Labuan to the extent that it became the leading oil and gas hub in the region.

“Labuan is a very special territory to the federal government and the development there will certainly not stop as long as BN focus on its continued development.

“Labuan has a very big potential with its location being most strategic and it has a bright future under the BN,” he said to loud applause from the BN supporters.

Muhyiddin disclosed this in his speech when opening the Labuan taxi and bus terminal yesterday.

Also present were his wife, Puan Sri Norainee Abdul Rahman, Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, BN candidate for Labuan parliamentary seat, Rozman Isli and Labuan Umno division acting head, Senator Datuk Yunus Kurus.

Muhyiddin said the government was also concerned and always endeavoured to provide the best facilities in the territory at par with those enjoyed by the people in the peninsula.

“The ruling government here will continue to be strengthened through innovative approaches and reforms toward achieving a high standard of quality services to the residents,” he said.

Commenting on the construction of the bus and taxi terminal, Muhyiddin said it was an accurate move toward creating a public transport system that was planned and orderly which could ease the increasing traffic congestion in Labuan town centre.

In addition, it was hoped that the RM5.8 million terminal which was completed on Feb 7, 2013 could reduce the problems faced by the people of Labuan in getting public transport as the town lacked one-stop centres for taxis and buses.

The terminal began operations on March 15.

The terminal could also resolve the problem of getting public transport faced by the local people besides having the potential to become the pull factor for economic growth because of its accessible location. — Bernama
