A GUNMAN has shot dead a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer in an eruption of gunfire at the prestigious US university, Sky News reports.

The university in Boston says the situation is ‘extremely dangerous’ and has warned students in an emergency alert on its website to stay indoors.

The Massachusetts district attorney’s office has confirmed the officer’s death and says it is investigating.

An alert on MIT’s website said the gunshots started at 10:48pm on Thursday local time and that the building where the shots were fired had been ‘surrounded by responding agencies.’

A major hunt has been launched for the gunman. Police with rifles are in the streets, and search helicopters are flying above the university.
