SM Sains Kuching edge SM Sains Miri in cricket final

MIRI: SM Sains Kuching emerged victorious in the SQL Zone Full Boarding Schools Cricket Championship after beating SM Sains Miri in the final played recently.

SM Sains Kuching won the championship by eight wickets. On winning the toss, Sains Kuching put SM Sains Miri to bat but they only managed 25 runs in 11.2 overs.

SM Sains Kuching had a fair share of the wicket with Asrul Fahmi 3 for 5, Mohd Siddiq 2 for 4, Zainal Abidin 2 for 7 and Mohd Asri 2 for 1.

With this SM Sains Kuching only needed 26 runs to seal their victory but in the haste, they lost two wickets before the match ended in their favour. SM Sains Sabah came third while SM Sains Labuan were fourth.

SM Sains Kuching team manager Che Nazlie and coach Yusri Azmi both expressed satisfaction on the performance of their charges who secured the historic win. They said the win was also very meaningful to both the school and the parents of the players who had supported the team from the beginning.

The victory had also given a big dose of confidence to the young cricketers who will represent East Malaysia at the national championship to be held at SM Sultan Muhammad Jiwa, Kedah next month.

SM Sains Kuching’s captain Asrul Fahmi and Syed Hamidi were named the Best Bowler and Best Wicketkeeper respectively while Aiman Akmal from Sains Sabah won the Best Allrounder award. Shah Hafia Hanif from Sains Miri won Best Bastman award.

Six schools namely SM Sains Kuching, Sains Kuching Utara, Sains Miri from Sarawak, Sains Sabah, Lahad Datu from Sabah and Sains Labuan from Labuan took part in the five day championship.

Miri Education Officer, Alias Ngah was present to officiate the closing ceremony and gave away the prizes.Also presented was SM Sains Miri principal Hajah Serina.
