Independent candidate hopes for former USNO supporters’ votes

SEMPORNA: Trees, boat, clock, chair, flower, book, fish, key and cloth were chosen by independent candidates vying for the Semporna parliamentary seat in the 13th general election on May 5.

After nomination was closed at 10am at the nomination centre at Semporna Community Hall yesterday, P189 Semporna and N53 Senallang candidate Datu Badaruddin Tun Datu Hj Mustapha chose ‘house’ as his symbol.

Badaruddin who hoped for votes from former USNO supporters, will face P189 Semporna incumbent Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Abdal and N53 Senallang incumbent Datuk Nasir Sakaran.

The other independent candidates for Senallang, Ab Karim Talip chose ‘flower’ as his symbol and Abdul Manang Hatib Lawari @ Osman chose ‘book’.

N52 Sulabayan independent candidates Ghazalie Pg Hindi @ Abdul Ghani chose ‘boat’, Hussein Mumakil chose ‘tree’, Julkalani Abd Rahman ‘clock’ and Mamat Barhana chose ‘chair’.

For N54 Bugaya, independent candidates Abdul Hussin Kiamsin chose ‘key’, Alimin Budin ‘fish’, and Abdullah Sani Abdul Salleh chose ‘cloth’ as their respective symbols for the 13th general election.

The weather was fine and supporters were well behaved. The nomination compound and centre were closely guarded by the police. Only the RTM crew and Information Department photographer were allowed into the nomination centre while other members of the press and media had to wait at the compound.
