Peaceful nomination in Sabah – Police

KOTA KINABALU: No incident was reported during nomination day at all the nomination centres in the state yesterday.

State Police Training Centre (Pulapol) commander Superintendent Mohd Azhar Hamin, who is the spokesperson for the police during the 13the General Election, said no police report was lodged by any political parties and no unwanted incident happened during nomination day.

“Nomination day today (yesterday) at all nomination centres went smoothly without any incident.

“We thanked the public, especially party supporters, for abiding by the law and following instruction from the police,” he said at a press conference at the state police headquarters in Kepayan here yesterday.

It was also learnt that hot seats, such as Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Beaufort, Sepanggar, Pensiangan, Tawau, Tuaran and Penampang were reported to be peaceful without any incident.

According to Mohd Azhar, police estimated about 80,000 people turned up for nomination day in support of their candidates.

He said about 2,000 police officers and personnel were on duty to maintain peace and order at all the nomination centres.

Mohd Azhar hoped it would also be an incident-free election day on May 5 and he reminded the public, especially party supporters, to show their support and give their full cooperation to the police.

He also reminded candidates and their supporters to continue to abide by the Election Act 1958, Election Offences Act 1958 and the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 to ensure smooth polling.
