Curtin’s Kueh wins Maxis scholarship

MIRI: Esther Kueh Yue Ning who is pursuing a degree in electrical power engineering at Curtin University, Sarawak Campus, recently created a record for being the first university student to receive the prestigious ‘Maxis Scholarship for Excellence Award’ (MSEA).

However, she could not come to receive the award due to study commitments, and thus was represented by her parents at Menara Maxis in Kuala
Lumpur.

Maxis chairman, Raja Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Arshad Raja Tun Uda, gave away the award at the presentation ceremony which was also attended by 15 other recipients and their families.

The Maxis’ Senior Leadership Team and the MSEA selection panel, as well as the university representatives, including the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Curtin Sarawak’s School of Engineering and Science and Associate Professor Ashutosh Kumar Singh.

Kueh’s parents were proud of the recognition, saying it was a milestone achievement for the family.

“This surely boosts her morale and encourages her to strive in her studies for greater success in future,” they commended.

The MSEA recognises the young and outstanding undergraduates in Malaysian universities to develop and enrich their communities.

The scholarship is part of Maxis’ overall Corporate Responsibility (CR) agenda that focuses on education and community-based activities.

Each recipient went through a rigorous two-level interview process and was selected in the final stage by a panel of distinguished judges.

This year, a total of 2,000 applications were received.

The scholarship provides the recipients with financial aid of RM10,000 annually till completion of their courses, and allows them to pursue undergraduate studies locally and abroad.

MSEA past recipients had gained entry into a number of Malaysian public and private universities, including Universiti Malaya, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Monash University and International Medical University, as well as universities abroad — London School of Economics, King’s College of London, Columbia University and Harvard Business School.
