Town square’s centre stage 84 pct completed

SIBU: The RM2 million renovation works on the centre stage of Sibu Town Square here is 84 per cent completed, says Sibu Municipal Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King.

He told the council’s monthly meeting here yesterday that the stage, once completed on May 30, would be an iconic structure in the centre of the town. The work started on Oct 1 last year.

Facilities being incorporated into the stage are two changing rooms with toilet facilities, audio video control room and distribution panels, utility room, VVIP restroom, the backstage and a large stage floor.

The stage will be equipped with excellent acoustics and lighting system.

Tiong said that Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) from June 28 to July 7 would be the first major event to be held there.

He also told the meeting about the progress of works to improve the wet market section of Sibu Central Market.

The RM918,000-project began on March 1.

He said that from the total amount, RM632,000 was meant for the renovation of the wet market area, which had been completed ahead of schedule.

The wet market now has 160 stainless steel concrete benches for vendors to ply their trade.

The vendors are expected to occupy these benches by end of this month.
