EC: Despatch of ballot boxes to states normal

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) explained that the despatch of ballot boxes to the states is normal to meet voting requirements nationwide. Deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said the dispatch of ballot boxes and other items was done on the request of returning officers in each area to ensure smooth polling.

“What is there to be suspicious? It is the EC job to despatch logistics in relation to the election,” he told Bernama here yesterday. Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reportedly said an EC vehicle was recently spotted transferring ballot boxes in Sungai Chua Industrial Zone, Kajang, Selangor.

Asked about the allegation of 28,000 foreigners in the latest electoral roll, Wan Ahmad said they were registered voters after being certified by the National Registration Department (NRD).

He questioned why the issue was raised now as all parties were given enough time to dispute the electoral roll before it was gazetted.

“Who is he to accuse someone of not being a citizen? Anyone can issue such a statement . This electoral roll is valid and registered according to the law.” Wan Ahmad stressed that the electoral roll was final and those listed were eligible to vote and that they should not be denied the right.

He urged the opposition not to issue statements that mislead the public and should not involve the EC in its election campaign. “It’s better for the opposition to say what it plans to do and leave it to the voters to make evaluation,” he added. — Bernama
