Lambak Kiri Secondary School holds annual sports day

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN:  The annual sports day held yesterday saw students of Lambak Kiri Secondary School (SMLK) converged to compete in the true spirit of sportsmanship for the glory of their respective sport houses; Kasuma, Setia, Mahkota and Laila, during the finale of the annual sports day that took place at the Padang Kebajikan, Berakas, Borneo Bulletin reported.

Consisting of mainly field events, the sports day saw young students having a good time testing themselves physically and competing healthily against their peers in various categories such as 100m, 200m and 4x100m race for both male and female, long jump, javelin throw, to name a few. Some of the games were held two days before the final round.

The guest of honour was Pg Haji Zahari bin Pg Haji Ahmad, the Principal of Sports School, Department of Co-curriculum Education, Ministry of Education.

The much anticipated event kicked off with the singing of the National Anthem prior to the march pass by the students according to their sports houses.

The event then continued with a speech delivered by the guest of honour who highlighted the main objectives of the annual sports day which are to identify new talents in athletics, and exposing them to participate in healthy competitions as well as to polish their expertise in sportsmanship. Pg Hj Zahari also highlighted the implementation of “sports-for-all” in sports activities to include students with special needs so that there will also be a place for them to compete.

According to Pg Haji Zahari, it is hoped that the participating students will continue to be nurtured, shaped and molded so that it will help to polish their skills and would allow them to compete not only in the regional but international level in the future.

He also emphasised that schools should also be able to balance the progress of the student’s sportsmanship with their academics so they will excel in both areas.

Later, the opening ceremony of the school’s sports day was officiated by the guest of honour by hitting the ‘gong’ and afterwards, the introduction of the heads of the sports houses to the guest of honour. It was then followed by a sports oath read by the school’s athlete representative prior to the start of the sports’ track competition.

The sports day then ended with a prize and trophy presentation to the winning house.

Also present at the event were Awang Mohidin bin Haji Noordin, Deputy Principal Administration of SMLK; teachers and staff members of SMLK as well as its students.
