Baram needs new town, SCORE to spur its devt; BN believes Anyi can make it happen

MARUDI: The catalyst for development in Baram constituency is the establishment of a modern town as at the moment there is no major urban centre in the area

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud who made this observation explained that his announcement to develop Telang Usan into a modern town during his visit to Long Lama last May was to address this need.

Speaking to about 1,000 people at a meet-the-people session here yesterday Taib added that the reliance of the Baram area on timber and agriculture was insufficient to generate enough funds to transform the whole area.

“The poor economic activity in Baram before this has made it complicated for us to build roads to Ulu Baram, but now we’ve found a new way.

“We want to go outside timber and agriculture sectors, because if the government were to rely on the two sectors only it is not enough to cover the cost of transformation programme.”

The chief minister said that it was his dream to see rural areas like Ulu Baram and Ulu Kapit developed before retiring from the political arena and the proposed Telang Usan new township and Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) would be the main development thrust in Baram.

To implement its programmes and bring about this change, Barisan Nasional (BN) nominated Anyi Ngau as candidate for Baram in the general election because he is a local who had vast experience in the civil service, Taib said.

He believed that Anyi would be able to connect the people in Baram with the federal government in bringing transformation to the way of life and raise the standard of living in the constituency.

“He was chosen by Datuk Seri Najib Razak as he has firm belief that he (Anyi) is capable of developing his own constituency and can ensure that there will be continuity in development programmes and other transformation agendas in Baram,” he said.

He pointed out the change of candidate in Baram was a step forward in ensuring the continuity of BN’s mission to develop the country, especially in Baram.

“It is not only the change of leaders, but it also changes the way we run the state and country. We choose him because we believe he can become a teammate and can cooperate in bringing continuous development to the people in Baram,” Taib added.

Assistant Minister of Community Development Datuk Peter Nansian, Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Water Supply) Datuk Sylvester Entri Muran, Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, Anyi and Miri Resident Antonio Kahti Galis were among those present. #myvote #ge13
