Creative flag wars give new meaning to ‘battle’

KUALA TERENGGANU: No general election is complete without flag wars among the political parties, even in this era of Internet and social media campaigns.

But this time party supporters are giving the concept of ‘war’ a creative twist by coming up with replicas of aircrafts, keris, ships and tanks made of flags to show they are ‘ready for battle’ on May 5.

Terengganu is no different from other states in this respect where forests of flags have sprouted up along roads, bridges, pavements, street lights and in public places, in some cases even before Parliament was dissolved.

A number of Barisan Nasional (BN) operations centres in the state have impressed the local community with their interesting replicas.

One such division is the Umno Youth Sakti division in Teluk Pasu, Manir with its four-metre keris and giant two-metre ‘Pasu’ (flower pot).

Division chief Shahrizal Zainuddin, 36, said  the  decorations reflected their love for the party and their village.

He explained that the sacred keris was Umno’s symbol of pride and the ‘Pasu’ was in reference to the name of their village, Teluk Pasu, adding that it took them only four days to complete the replicas using plywood and aluminium.

Another attraction is at the Chendering Pantai operations centre in Kampung Raja which has a figure of a Malay warrior dressed in BN flags.

Meanwhile, Terengganu police chief Jamshah Mustapa advised party supporters to be careful when putting up flags, to pay attention to road safety measures and not to provoke any fights.

“I wish to advise all parties to obey the law and respect each others political differences,” he told Bernama. — Bernama #myvote #ge13
