Indelible ink poses no problem for Muslims to perform religious obligations

KUALA LUMPUR: The use of indelible ink in the 13th general election does not violate Islamic laws nor creates problems for Muslims to perform their religious obligations.

Islamic Development Department (Jakim) director-general Datuk Othman Mustapha, in a statement
issued here yesterday, said the ink could absorb water and did not contain ingredients which were ‘haram’ (forbidden) in Islam or with hazardous effect.

“This has been decided by the National Fatwa Council which met on Jan 11, 2012 to discuss the use of the indelible ink for the 13th general election.

“The decision was based on a report by the Chemistry Department and also clarification by the Election Commission,” he added.

The statement was issued to clarify the matter as some quarters still doubted and were skeptical with the use of the ink in Islam. — Bernama #myvote13 #ge13
