KUALA LUMPUR:The Election Commission (EC) will make a proposal for a law to be enacted concerning foreign funds received by political parties in the country during general elections, said EC deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar.
He said this was to prevent foreign quarters from interfering in the business of selecting the government of the nation.
“We must emulate other nations such as Africa. Every political party receiving foreign funding must make a declaration under the law.
“This is because anybody can channel funds, including foreign quarters.
“It can be a rich individual or influential foreign bodies, but we want to know their intentions in doing so,” he told reporters after holding a briefing for the country’s 13th general election today for international observers, here, yesterday.
He said no quarters gave funds freely without a reason behind it.
He said EC was sure the government was aware of the need to draw up the law and hoped it could be implemented in the next general election.
“Sometimes, we are amazed how a political party can campaign in a ‘loaded’ (has substantial funds) manner, using helicopters to go here and there.
“But we cannot make indiscriminate remarks, let those concerned carry out their duties,” he added.
In the meantime, Wan Ahmad reiterated his reminder to supporters of political parties against hindering voters from entering polling centres to cast their votes.
“Especially based on their appearances. Malaysians are multi-racial, with various skin colours and looks.
“If they qualify to vote, don’t prevent them because it is a serious offence to do so,” he added. — Bernama
