KUALA LUMPUR: The police have urged the people not to believe another allegation on the existence of ‘phantom voters’ in the 13th general election (GE13) with the spread of pictures of hundreds of identity and bank cards on social web pages yesterday and Friday.

“The cards which were scattered as displayed in the pictures were actully connected to a crime case in in 2011,” said Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar at a press conference, here, yesterday.

“The incident took place in 2011, not today, yesterday or in recent days.

But certain quarters deliberately recycled the story, distributed the pictures, maybe to confuse the community,” he said.

He urged everyone not to be confused and duped by the propaganda of those who deliberately sought to create doubts in their minds in the last hours to the polling day tomorrow.

“Their motive was to induce those who saw the photographs to believe “it is true, there are phantom voters,” he said.

Khalid also said there was no influx of phantom voters from Bagladesh and the Philippines via several flights as claimed by Parti Keadilan Rakyat de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said a check found several airlines like AirAsia had provided additional flights on public demand which was normal during festive seasons.

In this regard, he urged those who concocted the story to stop doing so immediately to prevent creating anxiety among the public.

“It is hoped the fabricated story is not taken seriously by society because to date the police have not received any report on the influx of aliens to vote,” he said.

Khalid said the Election Commission (EC) would ensure only registered voters were qualified to vote.

“There is a way to determine if a voter is registered or not.

So, at polling stations tomorrow, the voters and their identity cards would be checked,” he said.

Meanwhile, Khalid said information, which was speedily and easily disseminated due to technological sophistication, was a major challenge for the security forces at GE13. — Bernama
