MUAR: A post-mortem will be carried out to determine the reason for declining support from Chinese voters in the area, said Datuk Razali Ibrahim who retained the Muar parliamentary seat in the 13th general election yesterday.
The Umno Youth vice chief, who defeated Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s (PKR) Norhizwan Ahmad with a 1,646 vote majority, was shocked by the sudden drop in Chinese support for him.
“We will have a post-mortem to identify the reason why Chinese voters choose the opposition,” he told reporters at Dewan Sekolah Tinggi Muar, here early this morning.
Razali obtained 20,867 votes while Norhizwan got 19,221 votes. A total of 804 votes were rejected with 85 per cent voter turnout on polling day.
However, he thanked the people for their votes and promised to give his best in the next five years.
Meanwhile, in BESUT, Besut Umno division chief Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh who won the Besut parliamentary seat, said a detailed study was needed to find the cause of declining support among youths in the general election.
He said an approach and discussions were necessary with youths to ascertain their needs and aspirations.
“Why did they cast votes for the opposition? Do they not agree with the candidate or are there other factors?” he asked while speaking to reporters at the Besut District Council Hall, Gong Kemuntong Jerteh, here this morning.
Idris defeated PAS candidate Riduan Mohamad Nor with a majority of 8,342 after obtaining 35,232 votes compared to Riduan’s 26,890 votes. There were 641 spoiled votes. – Bernama
