Campaign worker dies after being knocked down by car

KOTA KINABALU: A 21-year-old man, believed to be a campaigner for a political party, who was knocked down by a Mitsubishi Mirage car along Jalan Kolombong, near City Mall shopping complex, here on Sunday night has died at the hospital.

Ignatius Ijohnis, succumbed to severe head injuries at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the 11.50pm incident.

It was believed that the victim was taking down party flags placed along Jalan Kolombong after the end of the 13th general election on May 5.

The driver of the Mitsubishi Mirage car, in his 20s, was reportedly heading to Kolombong from Kinarut when he lost control of the vehicle just as the victim was crossing the road.

As a result the driver knocked into the victim and the resulting impact threw the victim a couple of
metres away and badly damaged the windscreen of the car.

Meanwhile, city police chief, ACP Jauteh Dikun, confirmed the incident and said that the victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

He said the body has been taken to the mortuary for a post-mortem.

Jauteh said the driver has been remanded to facilitate police investigation under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He also urged eyewitness to the incident to come forward to assist the police in their investigation.
