Duo detained for allegedly spreading seditious articles on social media

KUALA LUMPUR: Police yesterday detained two men for allegedly posting seditious articles on their social website that may incite racial sentiments and chaos in the country.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crimes director Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said the first suspect, aged 38, was detained in Klang for posting articles that can fuel racial sentiments, on his Facebook.

“The second suspect, aged 33, was detained in Taman Danau Kota, Setapak at about 4pm today (yesterday) for spreading seditious postings on his Twitter account,” he said.

He said the first suspect was being investigated Under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998/Section 500 of the Penal Code which carries a prison sentence of not more than one year, RM50,000 fine or both, if convicted.

The second suspect is being investigated under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1998 which carries a prison sentence of one year, RM50,000 fine or both, if convicted.

Among items seized from the suspects were three lap top computers, five hand phones and empty memory cards,” he said adding that the two suspects would be remanded for investigation.

Their Modus operandi is to use social network Facebook and Twitter as a platform to spread information deemed seditious and that can fuel racial sentiments which in return can threathen the country’s security.

Syed Ismail advised those using the social media to gather correct information and data before posting such information on their blog to avoid any untoward incident. — Bernama
