TAWAU: Tawau Marine Police foiled an attempt to smuggle in various controlled items, including diesel and rice, worth RM9,909 in three separate cases, on Monday.

Tawau police chief ACP Awang Besar Dullah said 1,500 litres of diesel, 120 litres of petrol and 22 cylinders of cooking gas were seized from a boat at about 11.11am in the waters of Kampung Sungai Pukul.

He said the controlled items, believed to be smuggled to a neighbouring country, was thwarted by members of the marine force who were carrying out Ops Landai in the area.

“Also detained to help in investigations was the captain of the boat, a local youth aged 18, and a crew member, aged 42, who did not have identification documents,” he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, an inspection on two ferries which had just arrived from Nunukan, Indonesia, between 1.20pm and 2pm yesterday in the waters of the Tawau Harbour, led to the seizure of 1,550kg of rice, believed to be intended for the Tawau market.

However, no arrest was made as none of the passengers admitted to owning the rice. — Bernama
