Wan Junaidi: Planned rally against spirit of democracy

KUCHING: Santubong MP Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar described opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as being ungentlemanly for refusing to accept the result of GE13.

The opposition’s plan to hold an assembly against the result of a properly conducted election is against the spirit of democracy, said Wan Junaidi who is a lawyer.

He said Anwar should “at least accept the GE13 result like a gentleman unless of course it (the rally) is organised simply to tarnish the image of the country in the international community.”

When asked if Anwar wanted the upheavals in Thailand to happen in Malaysia, Wan Junaidi said: “We have seen the assemblies that ended up in demonstration in Thailand and the Middle East which did not solve their problems but instead created bigger problems.”

A series of demonstrations will not only destabilise the country but also destroy its economy, he pointed out.

“In a multi-racial and multicultural country like ours these (kind of demonstrations) may develop into a more serious clashes,”he cautioned.

“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is calling for national reconciliation and
with the sentiment being fanned during the assembly and demonstration, how could his (Najib’s) noble objective be achieved?” he asked.

“I just hope and pray that they are not going to create riot and chaos just to change what they perceived as wrong and inadequate. It is undemocratic and they are not fit to utter the word ‘democracy’.
They wanted to topple a duly elected government by undemocratic means,” he said.

Anwar told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur yesterday that today’s rally “will be the beginning of a fierce movement to clean this country from election malpractices and fraud”.

The rally is planned to take place in a stadium with a capacity of about 40,000 people in Selangor state near Kuala Lumpur, which is retained by the opposition in state polls.

Anwar claimed that the opposition had ample evidence to challenge the election results in up to 29 seats and this is enough to call into question the overall national result.
