SIBU: An Indonesian man was brought before a magistrates’ court here yesterday to face a tentative charge of murdering his fellow countryman.

Ucok Sugiarto, 39, has been under remand since May 1.

He is tentatively charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty.

He faces a second tentative charge under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt using a dangerous weapon on his wife.

No plea was taken and he is to appear in court again on June 7.

Ucok allegedly committed the offence on May 1 at about 5.40am behind the canteen of a sawmill in Sungai Bidut.

He allegedly killed a man by the name of Taopik and injured his own wife.

Earlier press reports said Ucok had long suspected his young wife of having an affair with Taopik.

The reports said Ucok left work earlier on May 1 to do a check on them.

He left work at 5.30am although his shift was only to end at 7am.

When he found them together behind the canteen, he allegedly took an iron rod that was about three feet long to attack Taopik.

Taopik is said to have died of lacerations on the back of his head.

Ucok’s wife sustained injuries to her head and arm.
