KUCHING: SUPP will continue to serve the people in areas where they are needed despite a disastrous outing in the May 5 general election.
Party president Datuk Seri Peter Chin said even though the party lost in major towns and cities, they would not give up.
“We will continue to perform to our best ability in serving the people even though it is clear that throughout Malaysia, the voting pattern of the Chinese electorates is overwhelmingly in favour of the opposition.
“Of course, we cannot generalise the entire situation until post-mortem reports come in from the constituencies we lost,” he told a press conference here yesterday.
SUPP contested in seven constituencies in the 13th general election but only managed to retain Serian. It not only failed to wrest Bandar Kuching and Sibu from the DAP but lost Stampin, Lanang, Sarikei (all to the DAP) and Miri (to PKR).
Despite the losses, Chin said there were silver linings in the dark clouds in some constituencies.
“Some areas indicated an increase in vote count compared to the 2011 state election. We will see how we can improve on that. Over the 54 years since the formation of the party, we have learnt that there are always ups and downs during elections.
“We will continue to serve the constituents even though some local branches may face difficulties in operating due to the lack of funds.”
He added that the party would be celebrating its 54th anniversary on June 4.
“As planned, the anniversary celebration will go ahead. The Youth and Wanita wings have been entrusted to work out the programme for the celebration.”
