Abandoned boy placed in children’s home

KUCHING: A four-year-old boy, abandoned by his parents at a coffee shop here two months ago will be placed at the Children’s Home here for three years effective yesterday.

After considering the probation report and hearing all parties including the court advisors, Magistrate Maris Agan gave the order for Gilbert Tini Abdul Rashid to be placed in the children’s home under Section 30(1) (d) of the Child Act 2001.

In addition, the mother is directed to visit the boy at the home once a month during the three-year period under Section 30 (8) (b) of the Child Act 2001.

According to a news report by a national daily, Tini was left by his parents, Abdul Rashid Zawawi and Siti Aishah Abdullah, with a cook at a coffeeshop near Bormills Estate in Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce on March 11.

The parents told the cook they wanted to attend a wedding reception in Samarahan and could not bring him along.

The cook left the boy with another worker who brought him home, bathed him and gave him her children’s clothes.

When the parents did not pick up the boy two days after that, the worker brought him to Sungai Apong Police Station.

Police placed the boy under the care of the Welfare Department.
