87 ‘Macau Scam’ suspects remanded till May 14

KUCHING: All 87 individuals suspected of being involved in the ‘Macau Scam’ Internet syndicate have been placed under remand until next Tuesday to facilitate police investigations.

The remand application was submitted to the Sarawak police contingent headquarters yesterday in the presence of Magistrate Bryan Mason.

The suspects comprised 55 China nationals, 29 Taiwan nationals and three local women are being remanded under the Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

According to a source, the suspects could be charged under the Act 240 of the Penal Code which carries a penalty of 10 years maximum jail sentence, fine and strokes of the rotan.

Police had on Thursday, with the cooperation of counterparts in Taiwan and China, crippled the syndicate that is believed to have schemed off more than RM4 billion.

Arrests were made following raids at two locations in Kuching. Also seized during the raids were 113 telephones, 11 laptops, two desktop computers, modems, routers, handphones and other electronic gadgets.
