MIRI: A training session was held yesterday for the mentors of the After School Project by Interhill Group of Companies.

According to Interhill Corporate Communication manager Agnes Nyelang, the training session was held from 6.30 pm to 8 pm at Wisma Interhill.

“It is our (Interhill) commitment to ensure the mentors are given on-going support and training to ensure the sustainability of this project,” she said.

Agnes added it was also part of Interhill Employee Club’s (IEC) commitment to provide information, training, and assistance to aid mentors in meeting their responsibilities of providing academic mentoring to the children assigned and to mentor at the location where they are placed.

“The project was established in late 2012 and we have quite a number of mentors from various professions. Most mentors are respected leaders in society and we hope other Mirians would step forward to help these children in need,” Agnes said.

The project unites the volunteers who provide free education to young children between the ages of 7 to 18, such as the foster kids from Lembaga Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim Sarawak Cawangan Miri Kompleks Kebajikan Hamidah Yakup and Rumah Amal Anak Kesayangan Kami Miri.

It is organised by Interhill Employee Club and powered by Interhill Group in line with the company’s philosophy of staying committed to people.

We hope to offer affordable learning opportunities to orphans or children with limited resources through the project.

Agnes said children in the foster homes sometimes have trouble focusing on their studies due to exhaustion.

Some travel long distances to and from school, adding to their daily stress. As a result, these children may find it difficult to concentrate on studies.

Agnes said those interested to become mentors may obtain the registration form at security counter of Wisma Interhill Miri.
