MIRI: More than 700 former teachers and students of SMK Marudi are expected to attend the school’s reunion dinner next Thursday (May 16) at Mega Hotel here.
The dinner is held in conjunction with the school 50th Golden Jubilee Anniversary Celebration.
According to the organising spokesperson the main objective of the function is to provide an opportunity for the ex-students and ex-teachers to meet and talk about their days at school.
“We expect a group of 700 to 800 people coming from all over the country especially from Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Miri, Marudi, Bintulu and Sibu.
“A few ex-teachers and ex-students from overseas like USA, Australia and New Zealand have indicated that they would come for the dinner.”
The programmes of the night among others are the message from the school’s first principal Ong Boon Lim which will be read on his behalf by the advisor of the reunion dinner organising committee William Ng, experience sharing session, short video presentation on ‘Down Memory Lane’ and the entertainment segment which include ngajat performance, long dance and modern dance.
On the following day (May 17), the school will hold a similar celebration at the school premises in Marudi. In view of that, the organising committee will make transport arrangement for those who are interested to join the school level celebration. Meanwhile, the school has a humble beginning and opened as the first government secondary school in Baram district (now Marudi district).
The school had its first student intake in 1963, with two Form 1 classes and one transition class.
The total number of students then was fewer than 100.
The first batch of Form Three students graduated in 1965, and they had to go to Miri to continue their studies.
Form Four only started in 1967.
Now, the school has grown several folds to become one of the largest government secondary schools in Sarawak with classes up to Form Six.
