MIRI: This year’s Mother’s day, which falls on Sunday, May 12, will always be very special for Gavin Hope, the vocalist of The Nylons, one of the eight bands currently performing at the 8th edition of the Borneo Jazz Festival in Miri.

As he and three other members of the band will still be in Miri on Sunday for the Jazz festival, Hope has his own special way of telling his mum how much he loves her.

Hope, 39, wrote her mother’s name, Susan Morris, instead of his own on the peg of the sapling he planted at Curtin University during the ceremony to mark the jazz festival.

“I want to tell my mum how special she is always to me. I am the only child and my mum and I are good friends. I will email this to here and buy her presents from here to bring back.

“It is the thought that counts and I also want this tree to grow well and be part of the beautiful environment in Sarawak. I love the forest and also the people are very friendly and I must come back,” Hope told The Borneo Post.

Hope said although it is his first time in Miri, the first impression of the place and the people were enough to draw him back.

“The time we have here is so short and there is so much to see and I want to go to the Mulu Caves here and Sipilok in Sabah,” said the Canadian from Toronto.

Meanwhile, Mother’s Day, which falls on the second Sunday of May, is celebrated worldwide to appreciate mothers including grandmothers, great-grandmothers, stepmothers, and foster mothers.

Some of the common Mother’s Day gifts are flowers, chocolates, candies, dresses, jewellery and treats such as a beauty treatment or a trip to a spa. Some families organise an outing for all of their members or hold a special meal at home or in a restaurant.
