MEXICO CITY: An Italian cyclist was killed in a hit-and-run in northern Mexico, cutting short a journey he began in Argentina with the hope of reaching Alaska in defiance of his diabetes, the Italian Embassy said Thursday.

Mauro Talini, 40, was struck by a vehicle on Monday in the state of Sonora, near the US border, four months after departing from Ushuaia, in Argentina’s southern tip.

He had hoped to reach Prudhoe Bay, in northern Alaska, by the end of July after a 25,000-km trek across the Americas, according to the Mexican Diabetes Association.

“He was run over by a vehicle, and from what we know, the driver fled and was not identified,” an Italian Embassy official told AFP. — AFP
