KUCHING: The chief minister, state cabinet members and elected representatives will enjoy higher salary and pension when the Members of Administration and Members of Dewan Undangan Negeri (Remuneration, Pension and Gratuities) Bill, 2013, is passed during this week’s State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting.

The passing of the Bill would also benefit the speaker, deputy speaker, assistant ministers and political secretaries, said DUN Speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar yesterday.

He told reporters at PBB headquarters after attending a pre-DUN meeting that the law on remuneration, pension and gratuities was last revised in 1980 during the Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub administration.

The DUN sitting starts today and ends May 29, but the Members of Administration and Members of Dewan Undangan Negeri (Remuneration, Pension and Gratuities) Bill, 2013, will only be tabled tomorrow followed by the second and third reading on the same day.

“The full details and amount of the revision will be disclosed by the Minister of Finance II (Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh) when he tables the Bill. The aim (of the bill) is to increase the respective salaries.”

Asfia said Wong, who is also Minister of Local Government and Community Development, would also table the Supplementary Supply (2012) Bill, 2013, during the same sitting.

The Supplementary Supply (2012) Bill, 2013, will be tabled tomorrow and read for the second and third time on Thursday.

On questions received for the sitting, Asfia revealed that the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development and the Ministry of Resource Planning and Environment received the highest number of questions at 27.

Questions for oral replies totalled 186 and they were submitted by 33 elected representatives.

There were 91 questions for written replies from 15 elected representatives.

The august House did not receive any motion for this sitting.

Asfia said there would be an election of a senator tomorrow as Senator Dayang Madinah Tun Openg’s term would expire this coming July 18.

Head of State Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin will officiate at the opening ceremony and deliver a keynote address.

The state banquet will be held later in the evening.

Pre-DUN meeting chaired by Chief Minister

The pre-DUN meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Earlier, Taib received a courtesy call from the newly-appointed federal ministers and deputy federal ministers from PBB.

They were Minister of Plantation, Industries and Commodities Dato Sri Douglas Uggah Embas, Minister of Works Datuk Fadillah Yusof, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi.
