SMK Riam Taman Tunku wins overall title at cadet camp

MIRI: SMK Riam Taman Tunku did Sarawak proud when they won the overall title at the national-level Prison Correctional Cadets annual camp in Langkawi on Thursday.

The 36-member team comprising 19 girls and 19 boys were champion in the group marching category, individual marching and martial art (Sentap) and came second in two categories – Platoon Commander and Cultural Performance.

Their prizes, the challenge and overall champion trophies, accompanying trophies, and hampers, were jointly handed over by the deputy director general (Administration) of Prison Department, Prison Commissioner Wan Abdul Rahman Abdullah and other senior officials.

Prison Inspector Ahmad Aznu Aziz Pung was the head of the state’s contingent and chief trainer. Also accompanying the students were two teachers Jalil Ismail and Jamilah Abdul Rahim, trainers and assistant trainers, Cyril Eddie, Zulhardy Sani and Eileen Wan.

The team was given a rousing welcome by the school principal Aziah Zaki and staff as well as exco members of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA),upon their arrival at Miri Airport on Thursday night.

Asiah, when congratulating the contingent for the success also thanked the Prison Department Miri which was directly involved in ensuring such success.

“Equally commendable are the strong support from the state’s education department and its Miri District office, and the school’s PTA.

We are very thankful that our school had successfully brought glory for Sarawak and hoped such achievements could be upheld in future,” she said when asked by the Borneo Post yesterday.

Ahmad meanwhile said the strong support and commitment by all, particularly, the students were among the factors contributing to their success.

“We really train hard to prepare the contingent for the camp. For three solid months, the training was conducted four times a week and each session lasted for three hours.

Thanks God we did it although there were many good teams among the 11 other contingents from throughout the country,” he said.

SMK Riam is the only school in Miri Division having Prison Correctional Cadets, established in April 2004 for secondary school students to enhance discipline and morality, nurture a spirit of cooperation and patriotism and thereby guiding peers to avoid social problems.
