Woman jailed, fined for cheating cop

KOTA KINABALU: A 33-year-old woman from Kedah was yesterday jailed for 16 months and fined RM1,000, in default, 12 months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for cheating.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus imposed the sentence on Pramila d/o Munusamy, who was convicted under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to 10 years or with a fine and whipping upon conviction.

Pramila was found guilty of deceiving a 51-year-old policeman by inducing the victim to credit into her account RM10,000 as the college fee for the victim’s child in Indonesia.

The offence was committed with an accomplice, who is still at large, at a bank here at 1 pm on Oct 11, 2011.

Meanwhile, Pramila was acquitted and discharged by the same court on another charge of cheating.

The magistrate made the decision after the complainant informed the court that he wanted to withdraw his police report against the accused as the latter had paid him back the RM10,500.

The charge stated that Pramila together with a friend, who is still at large, allegedly cheated the same victim of another RM10,500 for the same purpose at the same place at 4 pm on Oct 22, 2011.

The trial began on January 25 this year with the prosecution calling three witnesses before closing its case.

Prosecuting officer, Inspector Azaman Hamat prosecuted while the accused Pramila was unrepresented.
