KUALA LUMPUR: The police yesterday arrested a woman who had allegedly insulted the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, on her Facebook page.

The 32-year-old woman was arrested in Taman Nirwana, Ampang, at 9.30am, said Kuala Lumpur Police deputy chief Datuk Amar Singh Ishar Singh.

The arrest was made following an investigation under Section4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, he said in a statement.

The police also appealed to four people, namely Weennee Tan, Shuh Chien Loo, Hun Keat Wong and Carol Tay, to come forward and help in the investigation.

Earlier, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said in a statement that a woman suspected of having insulted Tuanku Abdul Halim on her Facebook page had been arrested.

The MCMC said in a statement that it had collaborated with the Commercial Crime Investigation Department to trace and arrest the woman following an investigation and after getting feedback from the public.

“She is believed to have gone into hiding after several blogs exposed her identity,” it said.

The MCMC asked friends of the woman to come forward to help in the investigation.

It said it took a serious view of the abuse of the social media by way of uploading content and comments of an insulting nature, especially involving the country’s institution of the monarchy.

Several police reports were lodged over the comments  insulting Tuanku Abdul Halim published in the Facebook and Twitter pages after the Yang         di-Pertuan Agong’s address over television in conjunction with his birthday on Saturday. — Bernama
