Sarawak Wushu Association exponents finished second in Brunei Wushu Championship

AGAINST ALL ODDS: Yang accidentally cuts her left hand while performing the optional nandao but she puts on her brave front to win silver in the event.

SIBU: Sarawak Wushu Association (SWA) exponents finished second in the recent 1st Brunei Wushu Championship after having garnered 10 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze medals in the inaugural event.

Brunei’s Muara District Wushu team emerged champions with 13 gold, seven silver and one bronze medal while Miri Division Wushu Association finished third with eight gold, 13 silver and 18 bronze medals.

SWA was represented16 exponents from Sibu Martial Art (Quan Shu) Association (SMAA) and Chinese Martial Art Association, Kuching (CMAA).

Frankie Hii from SMAA obtained three gold medals in the event and the 19-year-old undergraduate student of Methodist Pilley Institute secured the gold medals in the optional taijijian, optional taijiquan, and duilian (dual event).

Hii also took part in the recent 11th Hong Kong International Wushu Championship and brought home three gold medals in the same disciplines.

One of Hii’s team mates, Lau Kiing Fuu who also took part in the 11th Hong Kong International Wushu championship collected three gold medals in the same event but won only one gold medal in duilian (dual event) in the Brunei meet.

He collected a silver medal in the optional jiangshu and a fourth placing in optional changquan, his two other pet events.

SWA’s chief coach Gilbert Wong disclosed it was Yang Nyit Yu from CMAA who stole the limelight during the event by putting up a brave front despite injuring her left hand while performing the optional nandao.

As a result of the freak incident, Yang, from SMK Kuching High, was sent to the hospital where she received nine stitches.

Despite suffering from the injury, Yang returned home with a bronze medal in the optional nangun to add to her tally of two silvers in optional nanquan and optional nandao which she had amassed earlier.

Chew Wui Yung and Monica Goh, both from SJK (C) Chung Hua also gave a scintillating performance to bring home gold medals. Chew took gold medals in the optional jianshu and optional qiangshu while Monica Goh obtained the gold medals in the elementary nanquan and elementary daoshu.

Ling Kwong Leong, another outstanding student from SMAA, collected a gold medal in the compulsory nangun, silver in the compulsory nandao and a bronze in the compulsory nanquan.

Chan Gao Ping took gold in the elementary qiangshu and silver in elementary jianshu while Kelvin Hii took gold in the elementary taijiquan and a bronze in the elementary jianshu.

Other medalists included Ng Wen Cheng, Angela Lim, Francis Wong, Loi Ming Xun, Rachel Hii, Nicholas Kho, Hii Wei Bai and Wong Yue Ling.

At 10, Yue Ling from SJK (C) Su Lai also held the record for being the youngest competitor at the championship and she collected two bronze medals in the elementary nanquan and elementarty daoshu.

Chuo Hock Hua and Kiing Kiu Teck were identified by their coach as the two rising stars to watch as both returned with straight gold medals in their respective events.

Other gold medalists from Chenshi Taijiquan included Sia Chew Ming, Goh Ji Juan and Kiing Lee Tien.

The championship was hailed a good exposure for local exponents who competed with their counterparts from Brunei to chart and foster better rapport among them.
