KUALA LUMPUR: UEM Builders Bhd today clarifed that the company is not the main contractor for the Second Penang Bridge.

UEM Builders said in a statement here it is only responsible for the superstructure works of approach spans on the bridge (Package 2) and is not involved in constructing other parts of the bridge.

“Thus it is not and has no relations with the contractor appointed to construct Package A, the Batu Maung Interchange,” it said.

The statement also provides the list of project descriptions and contractors involved in the contruction of the bridge.

Sourced from Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd’s website, the list shows that the contractor for Package 3A is Cergas Murni Sdn Bhd.

The statement was issued following news reports claiming that UEM Builders is the main contractor for the bridge.

The interchange ramp of the Penang Second Bridge, which is under construction at Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu here, collapsed at about 7.15pm on Thursday.

A Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd spokesman had yesterday said the mishap, however, did not involve the bridge structure itself that was under construction but only involved the concrete ramp and steel girders in Package 3A at the exit passage from the bridge to the highway on the island part.

The spokesman said the project construction was being managed by the contractor, Cergas Murni, which had a good record in the bridge construction work before the incident. –Bernama
