Kuching Festival Fair back soon

KUCHING: The Kuching Festival Fair will be back soon with more exciting events to commemorate the city’s 25th anniversary.

It will be held from July 12 to Aug 14, at the compound of Dewan Masyarakat at Jalan Padungan here.

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud will declare open the festival on at about 10pm on July 12 within the vicinity of the open stage at the Dewan Masyarakat to be marked with a showcase of fireworks, said Kuching South City Council mayor James Chan at a press conference yesterday.

Various activities will be organised which will include the ever popular festival fair, comprising of the Food Fair, Trade Fair and nightly entertainment.

“This year’s Kuching Festival will be more enticing for the youths because the Kuching Got Talent Show will be back and everyone is invited to participate. A Brass Band competition will be held for the first time for secondary school students to take part in as I hear there are many who are keen to participate in it,” said Chan.

Apart from that, the public will be able to ride horses as horse riding is also on the card this year.

There will be 220 booths selling local food, drinks, international cuisine among which are fast food, restaurant food, Muslim food, Indian food and Western food. There will be a corner selling international food like Japanese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Korean, Indonesian and Chinese food.

A Korean group from Guro district will also take part in the food fair, selling Korean dishes.

There will be 200 outdoor and indoor booths at the Trade Fair while the nightly entertainment will include a wide variety of art, cultural and entertainment activities performed by local artistes at the open stage.

The Garden Show will demonstrate the bond between horticulture and the environment to inspire the public to beautify their homes through skilful designs and appropriate plants.

Other highlights are the martial arts display, Sports Toto 3-on-3 Basketball Jamboree, rugby tournament, football tournament and hockey tournament.

Earlier, Local Government and Community Development Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh received a courtesy call from the Stutong Community Market Association to invite him to the 5th anniversary celebration of the market.

It will be held on June 27 at Thian Court and 100 tables are on sale to raise funds to hold the association’s activities. The new association was only formed this year.

“NGOs like the Stutong Community Market Association can raise the community spirit, sense of belonging and togetherness, all working together to make the city more liveable and a place everyone can be proud of,” said Wong.

He said the bond is important to develop Kuching as a premier city, not just in Malaysia but in the whole world.

Hawkers play an important role in this because they have close contacts daily with the people, thus know how the people feel, their reaction towards government policies, government rules and regulations.
