KLANG: More than 200 care centres and welfare homes which are registered with the Social Welfare Department and run by non-governmental organisations will be classified according to grades A, B and C.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim said this was to ensure inmates at the centres and homes were given the best service and treatment.

She said the matter was being fine-tuned by taking into account feedback obtained by the society and the NGOs concerned and expected it to be implemented next year.

Under the system, she said, care centres and welfare homes found to conform to all standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the ministry, as well as met the standard of cleanliness, security and comfort, would be categorised as Grade A.

“For those with Grade A, the assistance provided by the ministry will also be A class,” she told reporters after visiting inmates of the old folks home operated by Persatuan Rumah Warga Emas Klang (PRWEK) at Jalan Solok Tamarind which was damaged in a fire here recently.

The inmates were now staying at another home run by the association at Taman Sejati here.

During the visit, Rohani announced a grant of RM70,000 for PRWEK.

In a related development, she said the ministry, through the Social Welfare Department, had channeled allocation of RM32 million to more than 200 care centres and welfare homes operated by the NGOs.

The assistance included RM2.26 million, including in the form of food, drinks and utility payments to 45 care centres and welfare homes in Selangor, she added. — Bernama
