90 employers detained for engaging foreign workers illegally last year

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 90 employers were detained by Immigration Department during its enforcement operations last year for committing an offence under Section 55B of the Immigration Act 1959/1963 for employing foreign workers illegally.

Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department director Mohd Zahari Hassan said in the operation, a total of 2,126 foreigners were also arrested for various offences under the Immigration Act 1953/1963 and the Immigration Regulations 1963.

“During 2012 we also received a total of 635 complaints and had carried out 215 operations.

“In the operations, we arrested 2,126 foreigners out of whom, 1,467 were men and 659 women, as well as 90 employers comprising 63 men and 27 women, aged between 13 and 53 years,” he told Bernama at his office, here yesterday.

Mohd Zahari said among the foreigners detained were those from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar, India, Pakistan, China, the Philippines and Nepal.

“The highest number of foreigners arrested were those from Indonesia totalling 636 people, Bangladesh (494), Myanmar (214), Pakistan (138) and India (130) while the lowest was from the Philippines with only 22 people,” he said.

He said he was satisfied with all the operations that had been conducted because those who were detained had given good cooperation and not creating any provocation. — Bernama
